PARTY PALS: A Kid to Kid Experience
We're in the news! Click here and scroll to sixth story.
In January 2006, while making sandwiches at a local homeless shelter, three children learned that the kids residing at the shelter did not get to celebrate their birthdays. Then and there, they made a decision to change that and 48 hours later, they threw the first-ever Party Pals monthly birthday party.
Since that humble beginning, the Party Pals have worked tirelessly to bring birthday parties to the children residing in the family center of the Presbyterian Night Shelter. They hope that some day their program will expand to include other homeless shelters in the area.
From party planning to execution to clean-up, this is a completely child-led program. (They only keep the parents around to drive)
Upon learning of a need for back to school items, Party Pals launched a drive to provide every child with new school supplies, socks, underwear and backpacks to start the school year. In just under three weeks, they were able to assemble all the necessary items, as well as secure donations for a dinner to kick off the school season. They plan to end the school year with a graduation and promotion celebration.
Although their primary mission remains to bring birthday parties to the kids, Party Pals are always ready to help the families residing in the shelter. They hope that by spreading the word and leading awareness campaigns, they will open the eyes and hearts of the local community.
